Portuguese Grand Prix

A Bit of Background:

Portugal has played host to its fair share of Formula 1 races over the years, with Estoril providing the venue in the 80’s and 90’s. However it was the 2008-built Portimao circuit, nestled in the hills of the Algarve, that got the official nod when Formula 1 returned to the country in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic and a re-scheduled calendar paved the way for its introduction and first ever F1 event.

The circuit had hosted Formula 1 teams prior to 2020, as a winter testing venue in 2008-09, and for several teams running shakedowns and filming days over the years. The Portuguese sunshine and more favourable climate was clearly an attraction to a number of teams in the paddock.

What Makes Portimao Unique:

Also known as the Algarve International Circuit, this is a rollercoaster ride for the drivers. Fast sweeping corners come in abundance around the 4.6km layout, with hidden crests and blind braking spots providing a rewarding challenge for both man and machine. Having only been built in 2008, this is also a modern world-class facility that looks visually stunning from almost every vantage point.
